Your terrace cover is exposed to the elements all year round. Rain, dust, fallen leaves, bird droppings, pollen, and UV radiation can all leave their mark on the material. That’s why it is important to clean it thoroughly from time to time. Regular maintenance not only keeps your cover looking its best but also significantly extends its lifespan.
How often should you clean it?
As a general rule, it is recommended to clean your terrace cover at least twice a year:
- in spring, after the winter season,
- and in autumn, before colder weather arrives.
If the cover is installed beneath trees or is exposed to heavier dirt and debris, more frequent cleaning may be necessary.
How should you clean a terrace cover?
For most PVC terrace covers, all you need is:
- lukewarm water,
- a soft sponge or microfiber cloth,
- a mild, pH-neutral detergent.
Even when dealing with stubborn dirt, avoid using aggressive chemicals, as they can damage the surface of the cover.
What should you avoid?
When cleaning your terrace cover, there are a few things you should never use.
Avoid:
- using a pressure washer at close range,
- solvent-based or corrosive cleaning products,
- abrasive sponges or wire brushes,
- chlorine-based chemicals.
These can damage the PVC coating, welded seams, and the protective water-repellent layer.
Clear PVC covers require extra care! Always use a soft cloth when cleaning transparent PVC panels to prevent scratches. After washing, wipe them dry to achieve a cleaner, clearer finish.
What about mold?
If a terrace cover remains damp for an extended period, mold and algae may begin to develop. For this reason, always allow the cover to dry completely before rolling it up or leaving it closed for a long time.
While cleaning, it’s also worth checking the seams, fasteners, and attachment points. Repairing a small tear or worn section in time is far more cost-effective than replacing the entire cover.
